Description

From 1912 until 1959 flying boats were a relatively small but vital section of the British flying service. During those years over 100 different types of flying boat were designed for RAF use - none surpassed the Short Sunderland. It was the 'Queen of the 'boats' It epitomised RAF Coastal Command during the 1939-45 war. From the first day of hostilities until final victory Sunderlands served long, well and splendidly; guarding merchant shipping lifelines to the United Kingdom, seeking out and destroying U-boats, acting as mercy vehicles, supply and communications craft, evacuating sorely-pressed troops from near-impossible situations.
To its crews the Sunderland was much more than just a good machine - it represented a wholly distinct way of life. As with no other aircraft used by the RAF, it became war chariot, home, bed and board to the men who flew it.
In this superbly illustrated book, Chaz Bowyer recaptures the spirit of the immortal 'Flying Boat Union' and gives us a vivid record in words and pictures of the achievements of a unique team of aircraft and men.
