Description

London, The Linnean Society, 1882. 8vo (22.2 x 14.4 cm). 46 pp. [239-261; 262-284]; three woodcut engravings. Disbound. = Among the very last papers written by Charles Darwin and read before his death on 9 April 1882 is one of two botanical and biochemical contributions, published consecutively in the Journal of the Linnean Society - Botany, Volume XIX. This is the complete volume (except the general title), with several other papers, and 35 lithographed plates. Both Darwin papers deal with the effect of fertilisers upon plant growth. The first being read by his son Francis on the 16 March and published on 26 June in Part 120. This was followed in the next issue (Part 121, read by Francis Darwin on the 6 March, but not published until 28 August). It is a little-known fact that in Part 121, the last page of the previous part (p. 261) is reprinted, so to unite both papers. In Part 120, page 262 and the p. 261 footer remained blank, whereas the second p. 261 has in the footer the the text "Linn. Journ. -- Botany, Vol. XIX", and the quire letter Z. In this copy, both pages 261 are present. Some mild toning and spotting, mainly in the blank margins, otherwise very good, complete. Freeman, 1800-1801.
