Description

A very early printing of the one-volume edition. With 33 illustrations, 12 of which being on full-page plates and one map printed in colour. 8vo, original dark green cloth, the upper cover ruled and pictorially decorated in black, the spine ruled, lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt. xxvii, 499, 44 page catalogue. A fine copy in all, the cloth unusually bright and fresh, internally free of foxing and very clean, with handsome ex-libris of Denham Court and later of noted entomologist Prof. Philip S. Corbet on front pastedown and fly.

Edizione: very uncommon in such bright condition. this is baker's account of his discovery of the last great source of the nile, speke and grant having established lake victoria nyanza as the source of the white nile and bruce discovering the source of the blue. the waters of victoria nyanza flow into the basin of albert nyanza, which speke and grant were not permitted to visit, and the latter adds the accumulation of its watershed to the former to create the great white nile, flowing massively from albert nyanza.<br> the importance of the debate over the source of the nile, combined with baker's very readable writing style, made his books enormously popular, with the result that they were reprinted a great many times over the years.
