Original printed wrappers with woodcut vignette. = The rare start of this series. Initiated, published, edited and largely written by the French author, art critic, and historian Jean Philibert Berjeau (1809-1891). Berjeau lived in exile after Napoleon III overthrew the second French Republic. His son, Philibert Charles Berjeau (1845-1927) became a natural history illustrator and lithographer. Uncut. In a later issue the editor disclosed that only 250 copies were printed. Inscribed in an old hand on the front wrapper; front board soiled and detached. Some damp staining to the lower margin of the front wrapper and first gathering; otherwise very good.
