Description

Birmingham, White & Pike, ca. 1920. Elongate folio (26.2 x 11.7 cm). Text on front and rear pastedown; thick cardboard and brass 'machine'. Mustard cloth boards with black title on the front board. = A rare description of a new type of ship engine, including a working model of this engine. The engine was patented by the British engineer Hugh Francis Fullagar (1872-1917) "as a two-stroke opposed-piston engine which offered the advantages of the Junkers-type engine with less mechanical complexity" (Grace's Guide to British Industrial History). A first working version was built in 1920 and the design appeared to be successful. Boards a bit soiled; inner joints weak, but otherwise fine, with the moving parts working in good order.
