Description

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - altersgemsehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - Beginning where Thucydides' unfinished history of the Peloponnesian War leaves off, the Hellenica of Xenophon is our principal source for Greek history during the period 411 - 362 B.C. In The Character of Xenophon's Hellenica Vivienne Gray examines the work not as an account of historical events, however, but as a piece of historical writing. -- Through close examination of the text itself, Gray uncovers the mentality of the writer. She concentrates upon the three main types of discourse present in the Hellenica conventionalized narrative, formal speech, and narrative to explore the historiographical principles Xenophon observes throughout the work. She draws attention to the importance of such literary features as story structure and design and their implication for historical veracity. She also analyzes in detail the philosophical purpose of the Hellenica: its portrayal, particularly through the medium of speech, of great virtue and vice, as Xenophon conceives them.
