Second Edition. Illustrated with eleven lithographic plates, mostly folding. Tall 8vo, publisher's original tan cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine panel and blocked in blind in an overall design to the covers. xx, 493, [2] pp. A very well preserved copy, the cloth clean and lightly mellowed at the spine panel, the text-block and illustrations all in excellent condition.

Edizione: an important series of lectures on the new found interest in hieroglyphs and hieroglyphic translation. spineto, having escaped france during the revolution, settled in england and engaged in intellectual and academic studies. as noted in the book, his lectures were warmly received at cambridge university for a number of years as well as at various institutional settings in london and elsewhere. the work allows the reader to know the long history of study that led finally to the understanding the meaining of the hieroglyphs and their station in egyptian history.
