The list of films in the Museum's collection provides scholars, researchers, archivists, programmers, the filmmaking community at large, and the general public, for the first time, with access to information about the rich and diverse holdings in this unique collection. During the past half century, the Department of Film has acquired, working from an international perspective, motion pictures that have made significant contributions to the art of the film or have enhanced our knowledge of the development of film history. The collection contains nearly all types of films, including fiction and documentary, animation and avant-garde, and other classifications, as well as some television and video, from all countries and every period, from the 1890s to the present.
