Con 6 tavole fuori testo, alcune delle quali a colori, e 55 vignette xilografiche intercalate nel testo. Prima edizione di questa prima opera di Tyndall dedicata all'alpinismo e ai ghiaccciai. Consta di due parti, di cui la prima essenzialmente descrittiva (tra le altre cose vi narrano le due ascensioni del Monte Bianco e del Monte Rosa), e la seconda scientifca. L'opera contiene una nuova teoria sulla la formazione dei ghiacciai, in contrasto con le ipotesi enunciate da J. Forbes.
