Description

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband etwas beston, sonst guter Zustand / Binding somewhat scuffed, otherwise in good condition. - The Golden World of the Pastoral is a comparative study of Philip Sidney and Honore dUrfFor the first time these authors are studied from the perspective of the Golden Age myth as imaged in the traditional pastoral. Professor Jehenson attributes the radical divergencies she describes between the two authors works to a different underlying poetics which reflects the influence of different intellectual and cultural milieux and esthetic norms. Sidneys Arcadias are seen as the products of the ethical humanism espoused by Pico and Vives. DUrf LA-stris seen to be closer to the Mannerism of the seventeenth century, and is described as embodying a shifting and elusive world view which is much closer to that of Montaigne and Machiavelli in its skepticism than to the primarily optimistic view of an earlier humanism.
