Description

Einband leicht berieben. Umschlag berieben. Papierbedingt leicht gebrt. - The History of the Railway Thieves, which first appeared some hundred years ago, narrates the activities of certain criminals who made their living principally by committing theft on trains, at railway platforms, and at railway junctions. It describes the manner in which these thefts were committed and the peculiarities of these of the operations of railway thieves, and it purports to give an account of the origin of these gangs. The History of Railway Thieves, as typical and curious a work of colonial anthropology as is to be found, stands at the intersection of several developments that have engaged the student of colonialism and that might interest the student of independent India, and it provides a engaging narrative touching upon the history of the police, the development and uses of fingerprinting, the colonial system of classification, the colonial apparatus and machinery of law and order, the advent of photography, and notions of criminality. Its author, M. Pauparao Naidu, served with Madras Police for many years, and was attached to the Criminal Investigation Department. This new reprint appears with a critical introduction by Vinay Lal.
