Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - The History of Theophylact Simocatta, the last major historian of classical antiquity, is our most important source for the reign of the emperor Maurice (A.D. 582-602). Theophylacts narrative concentrates on the two main theatres of war that threatened the empires security. In the east the Romans brought the Persian War to a successful conclusion in 591, when the young king Chosroes II was forced to rely on Roman armies to regain his throne, and Maurice grasped the opportunity to establish a stable relationship between the two great powers of the late antique world. In the Balkans Roman control was threatened bv the invasions of the fearsome Avar federation and by migrations of the Slav tribes, but by the end of Maurices reign energetic campaigning along the Danube had begun to re-establish imperial authority. -- Theophylact was no military expert, and he compiled his History almost a generation after the latest events that he recounted; as a result his narrative is sometimes unclear or misleading. This first English translation of the History, a work renowned for its stylistic idiosyncracy and obscurity, offers an annotated text to facilitate a proper evaluation of its evidence.
