It identifies and analyzes the distinct iconographie and technical characteristics of relief bases and discusses the relation of the relief bases to the monuments they supported. It comments on the iconography of Greek relief bases from their introduction in the mid-seventh century to the end of the fourth century B.C. Angeliki Kosmopoulou demonstrates that relief bases present distinct, consistent iconographie and technical characteristics that differentiate them from related monuments. Beginning with an examination of the typology and technique of relief bases, Kosmopoulou examines their technical characteristics and contrasts them with such related monuments as carved altars, funerary trapezai, and friezes for funerary monuments. She classifies the relief bases both chronologically and according to their original function, and she analyzes the iconographie repertoire and composition of bases for votive dedications and funerary monuments, comparing them to other similar types of sculpture. Giving particular emphasis to the relation of the bases to the statuary they once supported, she suggests that the employment of relief bases had a significant bearing on the sculpture they carried, in terms of both display and symbolism. Kosmopoulou devotes several chapters to the iconography of monumental cult-statue bases of the Classical period, discussing them in the context of the overall iconographie "program" of the statues they supported. The analysis of bases of this group fosters the differentiation between actual evidence and modern perceptions, concentrating mainly on extant material and primary sources. / Contents List of Illustrations Preface Introduction List of Abbreviations Part 1 1 Forms and Types of Relief Bases 2 Archaic Relief Bases for Dedications 3 Archaic Bases for Funerary Monuments 4 Classical Bases for Dedications 5 Classical Bases for Funerary Monuments 6 Pheidian Bases for Cult Statues 7 High Classical Bases for Cult Statues 8 Fourth-Century Cult-Statue Bases Part 2 Catalog of Relief Bases Archaic Bases for Dedications Archaic Bases for Funerary Monuments Classical Bases for Dedications Problem Pieces Classical Bases for Funerary Monuments Cult-Statue Bases Museum Concordance Index.
