The Master of Game by Edward, Second Duke of York. The Oldest English Book on Hunting. With a Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt.

First edition, folio (410 x 290 mm), liii, [1], 286, [2]pp., no. 107 of a limited edition of 600, chromolithographed frontispiece, parallel Middle and modern English text, half-title, illustrated with 52 facsimile photogravure plates and mono-tint reproductions, title-page with repaired chip to upper blank margin (not affecting letters), finely bound in later green quarter-morocco gilt over cloth boards, top edge gilt, others uncut, this is the large folio de-luxe edition printed for subscribers, not to be mistaken for the later small 8vo trade edition which didnít include facsimile plates as here. The oldest English book on hunting, written between 1406 and 1413 by Edward IIIís grandson, Edward, Duke of York. The majority of the text is a translation by Edward, of the book ìLa Chasseî, written between 1387 and 1391 by Gaston de Foix. To this Edward added five chapters dealing with English hunting. This modern rendering has been taken from the best of the existing 19 MSS in the British Museum. A description of the beasts of the chase: the hare, the hart, the roe, the wild boar, the wolf, the fox, badger, wild cat and badger.
