First edition, thick folio (385 x 325 mm), [iv], lxv, 158 leaves, [159]-220pp., 116 leaves, printed on one side only, limited to 300 numbered copies printed for private circulation, coloured frontis., 105 fine chromolithograph plates, with letterpress translation and commentary, pastedown with neat withdrawn ex-library stock bookplates and labels title-page with discreet stamp, original red morocco, ornately decorated and blocked in blind, gilt-lettered spine, rubbed with slight loss, bumped corners, upper joint cracked, marbled edges and endpapers. This extremely large book contains numerous coloured facsimile pages and English translation of an Ethiopian manuscript. The manuscript was removed from Ethiopia in the nineteenth century and purchased by Lady Meux, who commissioned E. A. Wallis Budge to translate the work. This book was published at her expense. The manuscript later passed through several other collections. It is dated to the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. Fourth Ethiopian MSS. from the Meux collection, with text translation and fine coloured facsimile plates. The first time that reproductions of Ethiopian art were made available to European scholars.
