2 vols., 8vo., with coloured frontispieces, coloured and monochrome plates, many photographs in the text and pictorial endpapers, small neat contemporary signature on front free endpapers; original series binding of coarse-grain blue leatherette, upper boards framed in black and blocked and lettered in gilt and black, backstrips blocked in black and lettered in gilt, radial corners, blue sprinkled edges, an unusually bright, crisp set in price-clipped dustwrapper. The set comprises: Vol. I: Families Sphingidae to Agrotidae; Vol. II: Families Agrotidae to Hepialidae. Nice set of the revised [and best] edition of one of the most successful of all W&W titles. 'South' remained the standard work on British moths until 1984 - an extraordinary reign of nearly eighty years' (Marren). See Marren, pp.146-148.
