8vo., Third Edition thus [Fourth Impression], with 2 plates as frontispiece, 7 plates and 3 full-page type-facsimiles, small neat signature on front free endpaper; original green cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy. Initially published in 1923 as Vol. III of Chapman's five-volume edition of The Novels. The 'illustrations from contemporary sources' are a new feature, augmented here by type-facsimiles of the first volume of the edition of 1814, and all three volumes of the second edition of 1816. Each of Chapman's five volumes is complete in itself, with introductory note and considerable bibliographical and literary apparatus. Importantly the present text was not set up specifically for the 1923 edition but reprinted from the Oxford edition of 1912 (see Gilson E133). Gilson E150 (recording the five-volume collection).
