Description
Edizione: scarce. the 1705 printing is very early and rarely encountered. the pantheon is andrew tooke’s translation of fra françois-antoine pomey’s pantheum mythicum, seu fabulosa deorum historia, which was originally published in latin in 1659. both tooke's english pantheon and pomey's latin original remained popular texts for students of greek and roman mythology for well over a century.
tooke never mentioned pomey in his introductory "to the reader" and pomey's name disappeared from the title page of the 6th edition in 1713 while tooke's name remained. thus, the work became known in the 18th century as tooke's pantheon. however, tooke's name did not become part of its printed title until the nineteenth century. it was reprinted twenty-three times by 1771. wiki
'françois pomey (1619-1673) was a seventeenth century jesuit priest from lyons and a scholar of considerable repute, author of a french-latin dictionary and several works of classical learning. among them was this manual of mythology written in latin in the form of questions asked by paleophilus ("lover of antiquity") and answered by mystagogus ("teacher of secrets"). this version became the standard manual of mythology in britain for a century, and continued to serve as such, in an expurgated version, down until 1859, when thomas bulfinch's age of fable (1855) was published.' jason colavito 2014
