About The Book -: We ought to know something about the different nations in habiting the large country of India in which we live. This little book is intended to give an account of the principal of them. Upwards of a hundred languages and dialects are spoken in India; so that only a few nations can be described and even these in most cases very briefly. Before describing the nations of India as they exist at present a short account will be given of the different races by which it has been successively entered. In the Narbada Valley rough flint weapons have been discovered, probably relics of the earliest inhabitants. In the central part of India polished axes and other stone implements have been dug up, shows little advance in civilisation. Races from the North-east, Dravidian from the North-west, entry of the Aryans from highlands of Central Asia. The Parsi came from Persia, Mohammadans from Arabs, Portuguese (Vasco Da Gama) Landed at Calicut, English came here towards the close of the reign of Queen Elizabeth. Other European nations came to India in smaller numbers, as the Dutch, French and Danes.
