This is a historical, political and legal study of the Shan al-Arab dispute between the government of Iran and the Republic of Iraq, a dispute which has not received the international attention it deserves, while it is a perpetual threat to peace in this area of the Middle East. The Iranian government claims that the Shaft al- Arab is a border ever between the two states and, being a navigable river, it should be divided between Iraq and Iran according to the Thalweg line. This claim has always been unacceptable to Iraq, and not in accordance its the historical facts.
