Description
Edizione: limited illustrated edition. translated by thomas james arnold from the original german poem reineke fuchs by goethe. the story of reynard the fox comes from medieval folklore and its exact original are unknown. goethe’s famous take on the sly, amoral, cowardly, and self-seeking hero first appeared in germany in 1846. this limited editions club printing contains a new introduction by edward lazare and with illustrations engraved on wood by fritz eichenberg. "the poet tells us that under the disguise of the animal name and form the world of man is represented, and the true course of it; and the idea of the book is, that we who read it may learn therein to discern between good and evil, and to choose the first and to avoid the last." editor. concerning the artist, little need be said but that he is considered one of the great illustrators of the century. his artistry here is pure eichenberg.
