Sm. folio, First Edition, with frontispiece in photogravure (original tissue guard present), title and series title in red and black, 21 monochrome plates on 11, 25 illustrations in the text and 3 folding maps coloured in outline; decorative red cloth gilt, gilt back, gilt top, uncut, backstrip with loss at head (not affecting lettering), short split in upper joint at head else a good, sound copy of a scarce work. 1000 COPIES WERE PRINTED. Sold from an institution with its bookplate on front paste-down, tiny stamp on series title (only) and press-mark at tail of backstrip. The original edition includes the geological map omitted from the facsimile reissue of 1967. SCARCE.
