Fondata alla fine del XVIII secolo da Jean-Charles Pellerin, l'Imagerie di Épinal pubblicò un gran numero di immagini incise su legno. A partire dagli anni Quaranta dell'Ottocento, alcune di esse vennero realizzate come sequenze di immagini narrative, dedicate a temi diversi e destinate ai bambini.
