Description
L’opera, pubblicata nel 1720, spiegava come ottenere la lacca a partire da ingredienti reperibili in Italia; fu la più influente del XVIII secolo tra quelle relative a questa sostanza, introdotta in Europa nel XVI secolo e divenuta velocemente molto popolare per il suo vasto impiego nelle arti decorative.
Il traduttore, Charles-François de Cisternay Dufay, testò personalmente tutte le ricette e gli esperimenti del Buonanni e fornì diverse aggiunte e correzioni, controllando le fonti citate e fornendo nuovi spunti e suggerimenti relativi ad ingredienti più in uso in Francia rispetto a quelli menzionati dall’autore. La traduzione francese fu pubblicata anonima per la prima volta nel 1723.
“The basic aim of this project was to translate Buonanni’s Italian prose into French. But Dufay was a diligent translator, committed to clarity, correctness and completeness. He repeated Buonanni’s experiments, read his sources, consulted Italian artisans, and converted Italian units into French ones. As a result, the translation was not just an exercise in linguistics but a wide-ranging project that involved experiment, scholarship, metrology, travel, and on-the-spot observations of craft practices. It was a substantial contribution to applied chemistry, one that impressed René Réaumur and ensured Dufay a position at the Académie at the young age of twenty-five.” (Bycroft). M.
