Description

Full leather bdg. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 156, [3] p., 93+1 b/w photographic plates. Original cover damaged. Otherwise a very good copy. First edition of this unusual and richly illustrated guide to fighting evil written by the Turkish superintendent of Istanbul Police Department. The book includes capture methods of bullies, fighting fire with fire, and catching criminals resisting the police. This rare work has been written by the principal-agent Nurettin, who wrote the first systematic book on how to catch criminals for police schools in Istanbul. In the early stages of his career, Nureddin [Gökmen] was an officer in the Istanbul Police School who quickly climbed the career ladder to become a captain. Gökmen's book, which has a very important place in Istanbul's history of fighting crime, presents a spectacular image with a total of 94 photographs (for the second edition of the book, the photographs were taken in the 'Foto M. Adnan's studio'). In those very interesting photos can be seen several police officers with their special Ottoman / Turkish police uniforms, fezs, and other characteristic dresses and accessories like knives, short-sword and pistols, etc. AH 1340 = AD 1924. First Edition. Second Edition appeared in 1935 as "Zorbalari Yakalama Usulleri, Siddete Siddetle, Hileye Maharetle, Karsi Koymak: Polise karsi direnen, saldiran azili mücrimleri kiskivrak yakalayarak, kolaylikla götürmek kaidelerini belletir.". A plate on the original cover which is inside leather binding is missing. No missing among the plates. OCLC has not located any copy.; Özege 5212.
