MEDICINE TUBERCULOSIS

Description

First edition, small 4to, [6], 31, [1]pp., title with woodcut ornament, title lightly soiled, closely shaved, occasionally touching catchwords and text along fore-margin, light foxing, the odd spot, later sheep, leather spine label lettered in gilt. First and only edition of this scarce work on tuberculosis. Timothy Byfield gained recognition for his innovative approaches, including the development of "sal volatile," a compound now known as ammonium carbonate or smelling salts. Byfield was the first person in England to patent a drug, marking a significant milestone in the history of medicine. Byfield also promoted the virtues of spas and spa waters, and his address provided at the end of the preface ("New Street by Fetter-Lane near Five Bells"), is the same location where bottled waters were available for sale. Wing, B6401; Not in the Wellcome Library; very rare in commerce, only one copy (this copy) appearing at auction in the last 70 years.
