Description

Photography by Miguel Roman Vega, J. Augustin Nunez.

Of uncertain age, this ancient city founded on the shore of the mythical Betis (Guadalquivir), has had over the centuries many excellent chroniclers and all kind of visitors.
During the nineteenth century Seville held a special appeal to the roman-tics, who used this city as a stage for their works and, with greater or lesser success, proclaimed to the world its myths and greatness.
It would be difficult, not to say impossible, to surpass the admiration in the descriptions of Lord Byron, as he advises the traveller to spend six days in this city, in order to become aquainted with her, or the judgment of Miguel de Cervantes who, although imprisoned here, did not hesitate to call her "New Rome". Lope de Vega called her the "Port and archway to the Indies".
Once again in the nineteenth century the Englishman, Robert Ford, wrote in his enchanting "Handbook for Travellers in Spain" the well known saying of "He who has not seen Seville, has missed a marvel". He strongly recommended that the artist or enthusiast of antiquities spend several months he-re. What of Rossini, the composer who became so famous with "the Barber of Seville", or Bizet who immortalized the cigarette ladies, whose difficult existence did not prevent then from taking pride in their natural wit, along with their anticipatory sense of emancipation.
As you can see our ancient city does not lack admirers (and probably some detractors, though we haven't mentioned any). Each, projects an image of this city as versatile as her Spring celebrations.
To all the many things published in the past, along with all the erudite historic and artistic studies made in our time, we add this guide which we present to you today. It is our desire to bring the reader up to date in his perception of this timeless city and its many vibrant an lovely traditions.
