Description

Jena, Gustav Fischer, 1907-1911. Three volumes in three. Large, thick 8vo (24.1 x 16.5 cm). 2785 [iv, 824; 902; 1055] pp., 1644 [430; 553; 661] text illustrations. Contemporary uniform grained half cloth over marbled boards. Gilt title on the spines. Floral-patterned endpapers. Speckled edges. = A massive, well-illustrated work by the Dutch botanist Johannes Paulus Lotzy (1867-1931). A part III.2 was never published. This set is unusual in being complete, uniform, and clean. No library marks, or other defects. "Botanist who took his Ph. Dr’s degree at Gottingen; subsequently Lecturer at Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore, U.S.A. ; from 1896-1900 attached to the Cinchona Experiment Station (Tjinjiroean, Bandoeng, Java), in 1899 temporarily stationed at Tjibodas. When back in Europe he founded the ‘Association internationale des Botanistes’ and was appointed editor of the ‘Botanisches Centralblatt’. In 1904 Lecturer in Systematic Botany at Leiden University, and from 1906-09 besides Director of the State Herbarium (Rijksherbarium); from 1909-19 Secretary of the ‘Hollandsche Maatschappij van Wetenschappen’. He made investigations on Balanophoraceae, and besides of his excellent works on taxonomy and genetics, he is the author of some papers on Javan plants. Oberonia lotsyana J.J.Sm. was named after him." (Nationaal Herbarium website). Please not that this set is heavy (over 6.5 KG) and postage outside Europe may be comparatively expensive.
