Description

Bruxelles, 1839. 4to (30.8 x 23.9 cm). 163 pp. 20th century pebbled cloth with gilt title on the spine. = This is the complete text (not the plates), of the fish-section of the zoology of the voyage. The scientific parts of the expedition reports are much rarer than the narritive, which was also written by the French explorer, navy surgeon, ornithologist and ichthyologist René Primivère Lesson (1794-1849). Included are detailed descriptions of new and otherwise noteworthy species - chiefly from Tahiti -, and a chapter titled: "Quelques réflexions sur la distribution des poissons dans les mers d'Asie". The first page starts with a drophead title on a leaf verso, with the paper above the title removed. Obviously this is an excerpt of the second volume, first part. Pictorial bookplate of André Gaulty on the first leaf recto, a younger bookplate on the front pastedown. A few spots otherwise good. Rare. Nissen ZBI, 1210 (under Louis Isidore Duperrey, captain of the ship, La Coquille).
