Description

Paris, P. Bertrand; Strasbourg, V. Levrault, 1839. Folio (33.6 x 25.6 cm -text leaves slightly wider). Title page, half-title, 86 pp.; nine lithographed plates of which two partly hand-coloured. Disbound. = The complete Foraminifera section of a very important, utterly rare, and extraordinary illustrated monograph on the natural history of South America, being the results of seven years of travels and collecting by one of the foremost French zoologists and palaeontologists, the French explorer, zoologist, botanist and palaeontologist Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (1802-1857). A complete set of the scientific results of d'Orbigny's seven years of travel and exploration in South America is a true rarity, and even the individual parts, such as this one on bryozoids, are all very rare because the production of this work, which started two years after his return in 1835, took 15 years before completion. The fine plates are by d'Orbigny himself. Molluscs and foraminifers were his preferred objects of study, probably because they combined his zoological and palaeontological-geological interests. Mostly marginal, and usually weak foxing throughout. There is a fairly modern reprint, but with a reduced size it is no match. Nissen ZBI, 3021; Sabin, 57457.
