La Visitazione

Bulino, 1593, firmato e datato in lastra in basso a destra, nell’immagine “1593/HG”. Terzo stato di cinque, con i versi di F. Estio e il numero 2 aggiunto in basso a destra.Magnifico esemplare, impresso su carta vergata coeva, con filigrana “giglio e armi di Strasburgo” (simile a Briquet 22244), sottili margini, qualche rara e lieve fioritura, piega di carta nella parte inferiore del foglio, nel complesso in ottimo stato di conservazione.Si tratta della seconda scena della serie di sei relativa alla Vita della Vergine. La tavola rappresenta la visita di S. Elisabetta. S. Giuseppe (?) si sta avvicinando dal retro.Come la "Sacra Famiglia con San Giovannino", questa incisione fu eseguita nel 1593 e quindi precede “l’Annunciazione" del 1594, invertendo inspiegabilmente l'ordine della narrazioneContinuando la pratica di modellare ciascuna scena sullo stile di un maestro precedente, Goltzius inconfondibilmente ha basato questa su Parmigianino. Hirschmann descrive la Visitazione come “meno magnifica” rispetto all’ Annunciazione. Sottolinea che la rappresentazione non riesce a trasmettere il significato più profondo dell'evento." Sono semplicemente due donne alte e con vesti ricche, che ricordano le Muse (dello stesso Goltzius), con lo stesso compiacimento esteriore e mancanza di significato interiore. Una figura è luminosa e posta su uno sfondo scuro, l'altra è scura e in contrasto con le aree bianche." Joseph (?) is approaching from the rear. Like the "Holy Family with Saint John" this sheet was executed in 1593 and therefore predates the "Annunciation" of 1594, inexplicably reversing the order of the narrative.Continuing the practice of patterning each scene on the style of an earlier master, Goltzius unmistakably based this one on Parmigianino. Hirschmann describes the Visitation" as "less magnificent" than the "Annunciation." He points out that the representation fails to convey the deeper meaning of the event. "They are merely two tall, richly robed women, reminiscent of [Goltzius] Muses, with the same outward complaisance and lack of inner meaning. The one figure is light and placed on a dark background, the other is dark contrasted with white areas.".
