Acquaforte e bulino, 1770 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Bellissima prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva, ampi margini, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Esemplare finemente colorato a mano a tempera ed acquarello. La serie degli ' Ornati delle Logge di Raffaello nel Vaticano, ' ossia la riproduzione completa a stampa delle pitture dei pilastri delle Logge Vaticane ideate e affrescate da Raffaello, comprendente quarantasei tavole, fu realizzata nella sua interezza tra il 1760 e il 1777 dagli incisori Giovanni Ottaviani e Giovanni Volpato. Conobbe un lavoro lungo e travagliato, giustificato dall’enorme mole di lavoro. Le incisioni uscirono, per la prima parte, in tre volumi, tra il 1768 - 69 e il 1772, frutto della collaborazione fra i disegni del pittore Gaetano Savorelli e quelli dell'architetto Pietro Camporesi, e del lavoro di intaglio di Giovanni Ottaviani. Nella parte inferiore delle lastre appare un'iscrizione che riporta il nome dell'incisore, dei due disegnatori e il privilegio papale di Clemente XIII. Dal 1772 – 1774, alla monumentale opera, si aggiunsero il disegnatore Ludovico Teseo e l'incisore Giovanni Volpato. La raccolta ebbe vastissima risonanza e rappresentò una delle operazioni di riproduzione più impegnative, venendo a costituire un importante repertorio figurativo da cui attingere motivi di decorazione e contribuendo al grande successo dei temi grotteschi del periodo neoclassico, influenzato dalle importanti scoperte affiorate dagli scavi di Pompei e di Ercolano. La decorazione di Raffaello per la galleria coperta che portava al Palazzo del Papa fu percepita subito come un'opera esemplare di decorazione all'antica e il successo fu tale da indurre amatori d'arte a commissionare disegni fedeli delle pitture raffaellesche. The series of the ' Ornati delle Logge di Raffaello nel Vaticano, ' i.e., the complete printed reproduction of the paintings of the pillars of the Vatican Loggias conceived and frescoed by Raphael, comprising forty-six plates, was produced in its entirety between 1760 and 1777 by engravers Giovanni Ottaviani and Giovanni Volpato. It knew a long and troubled work, justified by the enormous amount of work. The engravings came out, for the first part, in three volumes, between 1768-69 and 1772, the result of the collaboration between the drawings of painter Gaetano Savorelli and those of architect Pietro Camporesi, and the carving work of Giovanni Ottaviani. An inscription appears at the bottom of the plates, bearing the name of the engraver, the two draughtsmen and the papal privilege of Clement XIII. From 1772 - 1774, draughtsman Ludovico Teseo and engraver Giovanni Volpato were added to the monumental work. The collection had a vast resonance and represented one of the most challenging reproduction operations, coming to constitute an important figurative repertoire from which to draw motifs for decoration and contributing to the great success of the grotesque themes of the neoclassical period, influenced by the important discoveries unearthed from the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Raphael's decoration for the covered gallery leading to the Pope's Palace was immediately perceived as an example of old-fashioned decoration, and it was so successful that art lovers commissioned faithful drawings of Raphael's paintings.
