Superbia

Allegoria della Superbia, rappresentata da una figura femminile, elegantemente vestita, che cammina verso destra e si guarda in uno specchio; demone che aleggia su di lei; pavone ai suoi piedi, a destra. Acquaforte e bulino, 1618/25 circa, firmata in basso a sinistra. Da una serie di sette tavole che rappresentano i peccati capitali, Les Péchées Capitaux. Secondo Felibien, le tavole sono state incise da Bernardino Poccetti, ma ciò è ancora da confermare. La serie potrebbe essere stata eseguita dopo il ritorno di Callot a Nancy, o mentre si trovava ancora a Firenze (Meaume, ad esempio, la data al 1620); alcune delle figure ricordano infatti i demoni della Tentazione di Sant'Antonio che egli incise durante il suo soggiorno fiorentino. Bella impressione del primo stato prima del numero, stampata su carta vergata coeva, rifilata alla linea del rame, in ottimo stato. According to Felibien, the plates were engraved after Poccetti, but this remain to be confirmed. The series may have been executed after Callot's return in Nancy, or while he was still in Florence (Meaume, for one, dates it from 1620); some of the figures are indeed reminiscent of the demons in the temptation of St Anthony he engraved during his stay in the Italian city. A fine impression of the first state before the number, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, very good condition.
