I. Visscher Excudebat. Magnifiche prove, impresse su carta vergata coeva con filigrana “stemma coronato con lettere IM” (presente su alcuni fogli), con ampi margini, minio foxing, per il resto in ottimo stato di conservazione. La serie di 19 fogli Monumenta haec et venerandae antiquitatis romanae verstigia. di Willem van Nieulandt servì da modello, ma fu leggermente modificata e arricchita di vari dettagli. Sei fogli dell'insieme di Visscher, invece, sono di sua invenzione. La serie completa è estremamente rara: Hollstein cita solo un esemplare completo nella Collezione Grafica dell'Albertina di Vienna, mentre il Museo Boymans-van Beuningen di Rotterdam ne possiede solo una copia incompleta. Un’altra raccolta completa è quella del Metropolitan Museum di New York (che attribuisce le incisioni a Pieter Schenk I) e quella conservata alla Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen di Dresda. Oltre a essere un talentuoso disegnatore e incisore, Claes Visscher (1586-1652) di Amsterdam fu anche un importante editore di stampe, mappe e vedute topografiche. Come tale, esercitò una notevole influenza sullo sviluppo dell'arte paesaggistica olandese. In addition to being a talented draughtsman and engraver, Claes Visscher (1586-1652) of Amsterdam was also an important publisher of prints, maps and topographical views. As such, he exerted considerable influence on the development of Dutch landscape art. Following Hendrick Goltzius, he was one of the first to depict the countryside in which he lived as he saw it, without embellishment. He began drawing landscapes of the Haarlem and Amsterdam area in 1607. In addition, he produced about two hundred engravings. One of the most impressive examples is the magnificent profile of Amsterdam made in 1611. Visscher was a strict Calvinist and played a prominent role as a deacon and elder of the Reformed Church.
